Let's Talk About Cults

No, this isn't a post about Scientology (though it might as well be). Movies about cults are a pretty creepy sub-genre of horror because of how close to reality they can be. 

We're all familiar with the Manson Family, David Koresh and the Branch Davidians or Jim Jones and the People's Temple. It's all in the history books for eternity. If you haven't seen them, here are some movies inspired by these real events.

• The Sacrament - I loved this movie. It's not hard to dislike a Ti West movie in my opinion, but the slow, steady crawl to the end built up throughout the entire movie. Even though you know going in what's likely to happen, when it does you just can't help but want to jump through the screen and scream, "STOP!"

• Red State - Believe it or not, it's a Kevin Smith movie (yes...Silent Bob). Before you go in thinking this is nothing more than Jay and Slient Bob Rock The Apocalypse, I assure you - it's nothing of the sort. This is mostly a movie of suspense about a small cult, holed up and awaiting the end of the world (sounds familiar, right?). The finale of this film has a "No way..." moment, briefly, that really caught me off guard. Highly recommended if you want to see another side of Kevin Smith's creativity.

• Mandy - While primarily considered to be a revenge movie, Mandy also qualifies as a cult movie as the main antagonist, Jeremiah Sand, leads a small group of people who believe he is a messiah and must assist in capturing victims for his own pleasure. Of course, the movie is best known for Nicholas Cage going absolutely insane and stopping at nothing for the most vile killing spree cocaine can fuel.
