Immersion
Paul - The sets at Nightmare on Edgewood are excellent. They're really well-designed and go on forever! There are very few places that don't feel authentic, and the creativity of the layouts isn't done quite like this anywhere else. There are several locations inside where you'll walk into a room or through a scene, only to get a glimpse of somewhere you'll come across later in the haunt. It's a fantastic way to build anticipation. Teresa - The themes are scary and creative. You are forced to interact and participate as you go through, whether it's in a theater full of creeps or an unhinged factory or a farm full of slaughter-happy maniacs. I even ate some mystery "snack". The attention to detail really makes you feel like you're in the scene. One of my favorite parts is how your path is laid out so that you sometimes get a downward view into the nightmare you will enter next. It's not a spoiler so much as a glimpse to kickstart the dread of what's coming. Todd - Nightmare on Edgewood is one of the best builds we encounter year after year. Thematically there were no major flips this year from last, however the middle haunt featured a new, grand warehouse room complete with two stories and countless stacked barrels filled with acid and other toxic agents. It's very impressive. All of the builds here feel authentic and leave no detail spared. The new entryway and introduction segment was very well done as well. Emily - Edgewood does amazing sets and the actors work the flow of people to make it seems like you're totally isolated in each terrifying world. |
Scare Factor
Paul - Nightmare on Edgewood continues its run of being one of the scariest haunts in the region. Teresa - This is one intense haunt! The actors take their time interacting with you, not only touching and pulling and grabbing, but they will menace you with ropes and saws and blades. There are lots of jump scares that will darn near knock you off your feet. Definitely extreme! Don't say I didn't warn you! So much fun though! Todd - Nightmare on Edgewood still offers an impressive and hard-to-match experience across three different settings. The ambiance throughout is unsettling as always, however, this year the "threat level" felt ticked down a notch - especially in the first two areas. Generally speaking the character interactions felt more goofy than they did disturbing. Emily - Edgewood has a mixed bag of scares. There's jumps, tournament and torture throughout! Actors Paul - The actors were engaging, in your face, aggressive, and well costumed. There wasn't as much "circling back" as there was in previous years where each actor would come at you in multiple rooms, but they still kept you on your toes. This is a touch haunt and the actors use it well. It's not too over the top, and really adds to the show. Teresa - I love the actors at Edgewood. They are full of personality, with clear characters capable of so much intimidation. They ARE the characters, and not just people who memorized a couple lines. You get to spend enough time with them to have to participate in their antics, whether you want to or not! They will pick you up and carry you, threaten you with ropes, and I was thrown on a table and about to be vivisectioned. It's really tough to escape some of them. They just keep finding you! Todd - There really are no bad actors here. Almost all of them are quite boisterous and vocal, but many served more to entertainment value than projecting a sense of dread or danger. The exception is the final haunt where Mama and her kin were as imposing as to be expected. That's not to say select actors in the other areas didn't do a great job. There are little-to-no "RAWR"-ers here which is always a good sign. Many of them were excellent at improv interactions and didn't just stick to scripted lines. Emily - The acting at Edgewood is always one of my favorite parts. They did really well. I feel like we may have hit at a slow point in the night for them. I didn't feel quite the same intensity as last year. Entertainment Paul - From the moment you walk in the door until the moment you walk out, there's haunted greatness happening all around. The variety and creativity will keep you engaged the entire time, and you're sure to leave with plenty to talk about. Teresa - Nightmare on Edgewood is so much fun. The sets are creative and fun to explore, the actors are engaging and a great mix of intimidating and humorous, so when it isn't you on the chopping block, it's hilarious watching your friends jump and get harassed by these nightmare denizens. Todd - I was entertained throughout. That goes without saying. I still felt like the "scary" was dialed back a bit but at no point I was bored or detecting lack of content. This is a top-notch attraction that does a great job of transporting you out of reality for a short while. When a haunt can distract me from life for a short while, it's a great indication that it's a good one. Emily - This is one of the most entertaining haunts in the area. I always enjoy the barn, but it was even better this year! |
What Makes This Haunt Special
Paul - The foreshadowing. There are so many places where you get a preview of something before you actually get to it, the anticipation is constantly building.
Teresa - It's full-contact extreme haunt done well, interactive with memorable characters, creative and chock-full of scares from start to finish. The adrenaline, jumps, intimidation, and laughs make for a memorable experience. Todd - The combination of visually stunning builds and hands-on interaction are a winning combination. It's rare that a haunt does both. Emily - The building and sets are spectacular. Even if there were no actors in the place, just walking through the place would be terrifying. |
What Can Be Worked On
Paul - I'd like to see more floating actors that show up in multiple scenes. That's something they did well in the past, but this year I think we only got it in the Conley Farm portion.
Teresa - There could always be more realistic decor added or new unexpected things or character interactions, and more details added to amp up the realism or "wow" factor. For instance, I love the theater facade. That's a wow. But some of the theater rooms could have more authentic props like theater seats instead of chairs. In my opinion, it doesn't take away from the experience though. Maybe because you're forced to play along and that suspends disbelief? You're usually so busy reacting and interacting that you don't pay much attention to anything not 100 percent authentic around you. It's like when you're having a nightmare and all the details aren't there, but there are enough. Personally, I just want more of what they're already doing. I think it's a home-run. Todd - The general level of the hands-on needs to get back to what it was around 2021-2022. There are certainly some characters who will grab at you, shove you around, etc., but it's much more uncommon than it used to be. I wouldn't ever consider Nightmare on Edgewood to be a full-on assault, but it certainly kept you on your toes and really made you hesitate around just about any actor you crossed paths with. That feeling of apprehension didn't surface too much this year. Emily - Nothing really. I say the actors weren't as intense as last year, but that wasn't necessary a bad thing. They were still great and we went pretty early in the season. |
In Summary
Paul - Nightmare on Edgewood is easily one of the best haunts anywhere near Indianapolis, and is worth a drive from anywhere in the region.
Teresa - If you can handle full-contact, this is a must-see. It's so much fun to experience. There are so many scares, laughs, and surprises. The best part is how engaging it is. This is one you'll talk about.
Todd - Nightmare on Edgewood is worth every bit of your time, without question. Any criticisms mentioned are admittedly found with a fine-tooth comb. There's nothing bad here. For good or bad, knowing what Nightmare of Edgewood can be, for us, we have the displeasure of being (arguably) overly objectionable. For those who want some good scares and a great time, Nightmare on Edgewood is a guaranteed good choice!
