Entertainment
Paul - Land of Illusion has a hell of a lot of entertainment on one property. Not only are there 5+ quality haunted attractions in one place, but it's an excellent place to just spend an evening. Plenty of seating in the patio/midway area, a couple of fire pits, a big stage for performers and live music, food, a bar, and probably the nicest restrooms in any haunt I've ever been to. Todd - The park as a whole is doing a great job. The larger a haunt is, the more can go wrong whether it be staffing, upkeep, technical challenges, etc. Aside from the feeling just a small sparseness of actors in Temple of Terror and Dr Psycho's, nothing else felt "off" anywhere, which is fantastic. This was surely one of the better years I experienced at these haunts and as the weeks roll on, I can only imagine everyone will be in their groove and as the crowds grow deeper into the season, I know the cast is going to love every minute of it. |
Scare Factor
Paul - Land of Illusion has made improvements year after year, and it's been especially noticeable over the last 3-4 years. The haunts have had improvements, and there are not only more actors, but they're far more engaged as well. Todd - Land of Illusion excels at utilizing darkness to its advantage. Many of the haunts such as the Temple of Terror, Dr Psycho's Haunted Estate, the great Middletown Haunted Trail and especially Phobia, all have areas requiring navigating in near darkness. Of course, if that's really what you're after, the newest attraction, Lights Out, is quite literally just that. It can create a quick sense of apprehension. Since the haunts vary in theme, there's more likelihood that something may "get ya" within one of them. You may not be uneased by what you can't see, but if you hate clowns, then your constitution will certainly be checked in Killer Klowns. The park as a whole has a nice mix of jump scares, creep factor and a handful of WTF moments. Actors Paul - So much energy! The actors did an excellent job this year. Far more actors who were enjoying playing their parts, rather than ones you could tell were there because "it's a job." There were even a few who were so good in their roles, Todd and I looked at each other in amazement as we moved on from them. Todd - The actors in Land of Illusion are totally energetic, embracing their characters. Sure, there may be some new people getting settled in, reserved to the generic "what are you doing here?!" phrasing, but for the most part, this crew really gets into it. I can't go without shouting out to all of the crazy ass clowns in Killer Klowns Haunted Maze. They are clearly committed. Perhaps in more ways than one! They're relentless and some of them followed us through the whole haunt. The actors also shine brightest on the trail. With so many different themes mashed together, it's nice to see everyone embracing their particular areas. Immersion Paul - This was one area where I feel things have gotten quite a bit better! In years past there have been a few haunts at LOI where the sets were showing their age. Props not working, dead zones, places where there obviously should have been actors where there weren't... Those issues are MUCH improved. The sets felt much fresher and better taken care of, there were actors everywhere, and as far as I could tell, everything worked as it should. I walked away impressed. Todd - Consistent theming is pretty well locked down in each respective attraction. Dr. Psycho's is without a doubt the most traditional haunt and it has evolved quite nicely over the years. While the house is still the heart of it all, newer scenes leading up to it are fun, albeit short. I really enjoyed the asylum section and almost wish it was expanded because it was done so well. Killer Klowns continues to expand on its zaniness. Shrinking rooms and a shooting gallery are now mixed in with the human pinball room, double vortexes and blacklight overload. The trail has so much one couldn't begin to name everything but the larger point is that each area identifies itself well, whether it be a shanty town, a cave, a witch commune, etc. |
What Makes This Haunt Special
Paul - I don't think there's another haunt in the area where you can hang out all night and have this much entertainment in one place. The closest comparison would probably be Kings Island, but even though LOI does get a bigger crowd on some nights, you'll never have KI kinds of crowds to fight.
