Paul didn't pass the screening, so he had to prove he was human with some push ups.
Entertainment
Paul - I was super impressed with Haunted Hoorah, and had a really good time. Definitely worth visiting, and I think there's a lot of potential for it to be even better in the near future. Todd -There's a fun theme to this haunt which reminded me of The 5th Wave (if you've read that). As your group is checked in by the soldiers you're scanned individually for being infected. A few lucky people in each group will register as positive. In order to prove you are fully human, you'll be taken aside to do a random task. Pushups and singing a childhood song appear to be common options. It's a solid start to the theme which is setup in detail upon your entering. Teresa - Haunted Hoorah is a lot of fun! It's got some great props and effects, but the really fun part is the actors forcing you to do tasks. It's unlike anything I've been to before. You have this sense of urgency throughout, but whenever you get to the next scene, you get instructions, and never know what they might be. Some of the actors are quite humorous. You're constantly flipping between being intimidated and laughter. You might have to do calisthenics, or sing a song, or jump into a dark space, take a bullet for your team, you just never know! |
Scare Factor
Paul - This was our first visit to Haunted Hoorah, and I wasn't sure what to expect. I knew there was some kind of military theme, but that was kind of it. I was honestly surprised by how good this place is! They manage to keep the intensity up through most of the haunt, and they have several of the most unique scares I've seen anywhere. Todd - If you're scared of exercise, I'd rate this an 11. Be prepared to jump, climb and crawl a few different times throughout this haunt! For the actual haunt though, there are a number of dark corridors with plenty of hiding spots for jump scares, tight spaces, fog filled areas to feel your way through and some good actor intimidation. Teresa - The thing about Haunted Hoorah that makes it really scary it that you don't know what to expect. You HAVE to interact and do as you're told. Sometimes that's pretty entertaining and funny, and other times it can be terrifying. Jump into the dark and not know what's down there??? Eek! The whole place feels like a half-destroyed military base, and that roughness really makes you rather unsure about...well...your footing, what's ahead of you, how much danger you're in...everything. What are you crawling into? Actors Paul - The actors do a good job with keeping the haunt feeling as it should. Just enough interaction to make you take notice, but not so much to slow things down. Todd - There are two factions of actors here - there military and the monsters. The military personnel were quite good, leading a bootcamp-lite introduction. Some were convincing enough that I wouldn't be surprised if they are former military. You encounter them throughout the haunt, however it's most concentrated at the beginning before then send you in as battle fodder to combat the mutants. The rest of the actors play the ghouls you need to survive from. Whether they're failed experiments or post-apocalyptic Thunderdome maniacs, they all did a great job as well. It wasn't just a series of groans and yells, they all had dialogue, both short and narrative that sustained them as an individual character. Teresa - There are lots of military personnel here. They keep you moving through and advance the story. They also make you line up a lot and seem really disappointed in you as new recruits, overall, which is quite funny. Be prepared to snap-to and perform whatever tasks you are given! It's the only way you'll accomplish your mission and possibly get out alive. Immersion
Paul - The whole haunt fits the theme really well. Driving onto the grounds really feels like you're visiting some creepy research facility, and they do a great job keeping it there until you leave. I was genuinely surprised by how well everything worked together to do the job. Todd -This haunt is in an ideal setting. The entrance is essentially a gravel lot surrounded by woods. It's fitting for what would be an emergency recruitment camp. After your introduction, a short bus ride takes you to the main are which is mostly made up of an enormous building in which the heart of the haunt lives. The exterior parts you can see are run down and authentic. Once inside, you have your traditional barrack rooms (mess hall, medical rooms, etc.), and then the not-so traditional rooms like a crematorium and hallways with laser-tripping machine guns. It's all essentially a gauntlet you have to push through while racing against time before a nuclear bomb is detonated. The physical aspect was the most surprising element. While it's not extreme, we indeed find ourselves having to walk an incline, pulling ourselves up with a rope, jumping off of a 4' ledge and crawling under low hanging obstructions that were admittedly more challenging than they should be for a middle aged, out of shape man. However, it all really contributed to the overall experience. Teresa - They are absolutely taking advantage of the site, and do a great job making it feel like you're on some half-destroyed military base. Your mission, should you choose to accept it (jk, you don't have a choice!) is to do recon on this base and report back whether it can be saved or whether it should be bombed into oblivion. There's just this tension, because it isn't polished. It's raw and you HAVE to interact. The theme is fun, and the effects, sound, lighting, bus ride, and best of all, interactive actors make sure you don't forget who you are, where you are, and what your mission is. The copious interaction and participation involved is what really makes this fun. |
What Makes This Haunt Special
Paul - The set combined with the theme makes you feel like you're in their world from the moment you hit the parking lot until the moment you leave. I can't think of anywhere else that pulls you in like this before you even hit the ticket booth.
Todd - The miliary theme and the physical component are very unique and I've never experienced anything quite like it. It's definitely worth checking out if you're looking for something different!
Teresa - The best part is 100 percent the interactive nature. It's being on this base, not knowing what to expect, but knowing you're going to have to step up and do what you're told. You're forced to suspend disbelief and play along. None of it was actually dangerous, but it feels like it could be. You are on high alert for whatever is going to attack you next. This feels like a young haunt, although the props and decor are fantastic. It has so many possibilities and LOTS of room to grow. I can't wait to see it develop even more and get even more creative with the new recruits and what you'll have to do to survive and accomplish your mission. It's really so refreshingly unique!
