Scare Factor
Paul - This is absolutely one of the scarier haunted trail attractions I've experienced. Emily - Good jump scares and hiding places Todd - A few jumps scares, but I found this haunt to be more of an experience than a terrifying encounter Actors Paul - While the costuming was very good throughout, the dialogue and interaction with actors at Grim Trails varied. Some did great, while some just went with the classic "RAAR" Emily - The actors were fun and had good dialogue. I loved Peter Pan, the Hare, and ship actors Todd - There weren't any bad actors, however there were a fair number that did nothing but scream (many girls), which didn't allow me to process which tale we were experiencing. Those who did speak in character did an excellent job portraying the story. There just needs to be more! Immersion Paul - Grim Trails is designed to be a scary walk through evil fairy-tale woods and absolutely nails it. The lighting, sound, and the different sets really pull you in and there isn't much that breaks the illusion. Extremely impressive. Emily - I felt immersed in each set and like I was in a fairytale land. They has great lighting through the trees and builds. The Peter Pan house and the Sleepy Hallow pumpkins were awesome. Todd - For almost the entirety of the haunt, you're either walking a tight trail through the woods or through one of the many structures along the way. The buildings in particular work VERY well with each respective story you're experiencing. There was only one area that really broke the vibe - a floodlight attached to a building you walk behind turned on and lit up the whole immediate area. There were also a few props that her little-to-no lighting so although there was movement and noise, it was hard to really take them in fully. Entertainment Paul - I loved Grim Trails. Every time I turned a corner I was a little bit in awe of what I came across. When we walked out, I felt a bit of the "haunt euphoria" that I only get at the best haunts. Emily - The actors, sets, and general feel of Grim was so much fun. Todd - Overall it's a really enjoyable haunt. There are few quiet areas so there's always something to look at, actors to interact with or scenery to take in. |
What Makes This Haunt Special
Paul - The immersion you get while on a very long path through the woods is unlike any other outdoor haunt I've experienced. The actor and prop engagement aren't constant throughout, but the way they constructed the path and the lighting and audio that are used keep you pulled in almost the entire time.
Emily - It's a good mix of jump and dialogue from the actors. I enjoy that it's outdoors with builds spread throughout. The theme is classic and well done. I was very impressed. Todd - Other haunts have taken on certain public domain fairy tales and put a horror spin on them in the past, but Grim Trails makes this the focus of the entire show. It's all well executed and with the right costuming, acting and some impressive outdoor builds, those stories really come to life - in the dark. |
What Can Be Worked On
Paul - While there were some very good actors, there were some who could likely use some more direction.
Emily - There are a few places that needed more light. There was a a really cool spot where a girl jumped out from the castle wall on a bungee, and it would have been awesome, but I couldn't really see it. Needs just a little more lighting there. Then there was an animatronic dragon (I think) in the castle that could have used better lighting. Todd - Some of the stories were immediately recognizable, like Pinocchio or Peter Pan. However, there are some areas that I still don't know what they were supposed to be. More than one area came across as just "girls screaming' and the lack of dialogue, scenery, etc., made it indistinguishable. Don't get me wrong - one of them got me good and deafened by right ear for 10 seconds or so but I couldn't begin to tell you what the story was. Although the lighting is adequate enough to navigate the trail, there were some features that were simply not lit at all, yet it was evident our attention was meant to be directed there. |
In Summary
Paul - This was our first visit to Grim Trails and it most certainly won't be our last. The Louisville area is home to a relatively large number of excellent haunted attractions, and Grim Trails gives an experience unlike any of them.
Emily - Really loved Grim. I'm glad our group tried something new. It's one of my favorites now.
Todd - This was our first visit to Grim Trails and it did not disappoint! The concept of turning these fables into dark experiences is one with so many possibilities, I can imagine the owner and operators have a laundry list of things that could be done to keep the show fresh. I was really impressed by the structures along the trail. The house, ship and castle were totally unexpected and impressive. The whole path through the woods is also well planned; it's narrow and denies visitors the comfort of open space.
