Slider actor wants a chicken...
Entertainment
Paul - I've said it many times, but I love the American Horrorplex. For me, this is probably the most entertaining haunt we visit, and I have an absolute blast. I get scared, grossed out, and crack up- all in one experience. Todd - There's good reason we come back to The American Horrorplex year after year. It's because there's always that desire to see what's new, revisit the familiar characters and experience something that is truly unique. I've never had a bad time here - never even just a mediocre one. It's just FUN! Teresa - There are plenty of cool effects, jump scares, gross-outs, surprises, great actors and a great backstory, all with a side of humor. Getting scared or grossed out and being able to laugh about it (or at your friends) is always a great night. But on top of that, this is one of my favorite places to hang around after we go through. There's a whole setup outside with booths serving food, local artisans, entertainment, really great wandering actors, and my favorite part, a special needs animal rescue who have the cutest goats, chickens, rabbits and other animals you can meet. Everyone is so friendly and they just have a great time hanging out and chatting with anyone around. |
Scare Factor
Paul - American Horrorplex is like a horror comedy movie- think Zombieland or Shaun of the Dead. It's scary, it'll make you jump, but it'll also gross you out and make you laugh. I'm not sure what other haunt in the area does such a good job of combining it all together in such a perfectly horrible/disgusting/hilarious way. Todd - The American Horrorplex has always brough the unexpected. I've seen things in this haunt that were so off the wall that I can't even imagine where the idea spawned from. This year's visit actually felt a little darker and less crazy. The "disturbed" living experiments were certainly the showcase as always, but derangement felt more presented than outright comedic wackiness. Don't take that as a complaint - it's not a bad thing, just slightly different. Don't worry, the multi-teated man chef will still offer you his chunky milk and there's a new poo eater on deck! Your confusion and befuddlement at the purposeful obscureness of it all may detract from the fear level, but you'll certainly have a good time. Teresa - I have to be honest. This place is full of disgusting medical anomalies and gross things like "flesh lumpkins". So many deranged doctors and patients and really disturbing experiments that all make your flesh crawl. But the part that scares and creeps me out the most is the bedpan room, even more than the one where you see someone give birth to an abomination. I won't go into too much detail, but oh my god, the smell. The smell makes it feel all too real and that might be the most I've ever felt like running from a haunt. And that's saying a lot! Having said that, this is all served with a side of humor and it's so much fun! Actors Paul - I think my favorite part of the actors in Horrorplex is how much fun they seem to be having performing their roles. Nobody half-assing it, nobody just hiding in a corner and yelling BOO- everyone was giving it their all and crushing it. Super impressive, and they seriously bring the entertainment. Todd - I mentioned the "chunky milk" chef and the new poo eater. These are just a small fraction of the wild presentations the cast bring out in this experience. If they're not creeping you out or getting that knee-jerk jump scare, then they'll do what it takes to get ANY reaction of out of you, even if it be a laugh, a gag or a look of sheer shock. The outside area also offers a great cast of queue actors that will most definitely keep you entertained while you wait. Above all, many of these actors own their role, so much so that they appear on the haunt's merchandise. The character infused marketing is on par with The Dent Schoolhouse and Blood Prison. The dedication shines among this crew. Teresa - The props and sets really anchor you to this horrendous hospital, but the doctors and patients are the stuff of nightmares. Some are theatrical in their lunacy, some almost seem helpful, and others make you feel like you're seeing what Bedlam must have been like. If you don't know what that is, there's a rabbit hole for you. Some of these characters try to help you, some put you on edge, and some make your skin want to climb off of your bones. They each seem to revel in each being crazier than the last. And the gross-outs are hilariously disturbing. Great scares and laughs! Immersion Paul - Is there a haunt with more props in it anywhere? There's SO much stuff in Horrorplex, but I wouldn't have it any other way. The pathways are straight, yet you wind back and forth; there's a ton of lighting, but it's not overly bright; there are props literally everywhere, but it's not cluttered. You get drawn into the story at the beginning, and the haunt does an excellent job of keeping you pulled in until the very end. Todd - The American Horrorplex has one of the best back stories and themes around. Not only has it built off of the same lore year after year, but all of the accompanying exhibits in the queue, character profiles on social media and one of the best entrance videos I've experienced in some time all really add up to a fantastic presentation. Teresa - It's pretty much the worst hospital you can imagine, filled with maniacal doctors who want to use you as guinea pigs, insane staff, crazed patients with all kinds of abnormalities and quirks, and you just go from one disturbing room to another, all while feeling this overwhelming sense of disgust that makes you want to sprint to an exit that you just can't seem to find. But it's so gross that it's funny and we always have a great time here! |
What Makes This Haunt Special
Paul - The entertainment! It's just so damn good. Also, there are goats outside once you finish, and that doesn't hurt.
Todd - The entire experience inside and outside the haunt feels like a large community just getting together to have fun. The vendor turnout outside is great. There are all sorts of food, drink, crafts and merch for sale - and let's not forget the goats! Once again an animal sanctuary had brought special needs animals for petting and feeding, and if you like, you can donate to the cause. As we left, I took a look around and people weren't leaving. Groups of people were just standing around, enjoying themselves and relaxing. THIS is what The American Horrorplex is all about.
Teresa - It has a great sense of humor and it's so welcoming. I know that sounds weird, but it feels like this little community that sets up every weekend and just hangs out and welcomes everyone as new friends. There are even kids dressed up in seriously creepy costumes holding live animals and scaring people in the queue. It's just a fun place to come and get scared and laugh, then hang out, browse booths, chat, pet some animals, grab some photos, oh, and they have a really great gift shop! It's pretty large and the haunt merch is fantastic, but there are also collectibles and fun Halloween decor.
