Entertainment
Paul - Off the charts entertaining. The actors are both scary and funny, the haunt has a great theme that's carried well throughout, the queue area has plenty of roaming actors to keep you on your toes, and the midway at the end is an awesome place to hang out for a while after the haunt. Teresa - This place is very entertaining. There's something for everyone. Great story, scares, laughs, surprises...and so much more! There's a gift shop when you come out with all kinds of snacks and goodies. You can also get photos. But wait! There's more! When you exit, there are all kinds of booths outside selling all kinds of food, gifts, crafts, creepy stuff, and...you can feed and pet rescue animals like goats! They are so darn cute! There's also a stage for live shows. Todd - Without question it was top tier entertainment from beginning to end and MUCH of that is due to the uninhibited actors. I’d give it a 5 for fun too. |
Scare Factor
Paul - American Horrorplex continues to up its scariness every year, while still keeping with the entertainment I've enjoyed for years Teresa - There are plenty of scares throughout the Bracken-Hart Institute for the Criminally Insane. Especially if you're horrified by gross things. Like really gross. There are lots of jump scares and surprises, and some of the actors are pretty creepy and intimidating. There is very much an undercurrent of tongue-in-cheek humor though. There is just enough mix of real-sounding history, with hilarious-sounding sci-fi to make a really interesting setting. Flesh lumpkins sound pretty funny, but they're a bit horrifying when you're facing them in the haunt! Not to mention the utterly insane patients, doctors, experiments, and associated horrors. Todd - The American Horrorplex isn’t the scariest or darkest haunt out there. That doesn’t mean that the jump scares aren’t there or the gross out scares are lacking. There’s plenty of gore and body fluids to go around - even some poo up for the taking. Oh…and the milk. Yeah. Actors Paul - Great jobs throughout. The actors were on point- jump scaring where they're supposed to, delivering their lines and routines with enthusiasm, and keeping all of the guests on edge. There wasn't a single one who I felt wasn't into their role, and who wasn't giving it 100%. Teresa - The actors are fantastic. They play their various roles with zeal. Most of them are VERY interactive, and often the scary comes with a side of humor. There was a guy with a toilet plunger stuck to his belly! They aren't afraid to put you in really disturbing situations. Some of them were doing the grossest things! Please bring your squeamish friends if you want lots of laughs! Todd - Where do they find these people? The American Horrorplex had the most off the wall, batshit-crazy actors I may have ever seen. If they’re not scaring you, they’re grossing you out. If they’re not grossing you out, they’re cracking you up. Their energy is maxed though the whole thing - even outside the haunt (as pee bag girl passed us to go to the bathroom)! Immersion Paul - Horrorplex has done a great job of ramping this score up over the years. The pathways were windy and visually obstructed (as they should be), the lighting was nearly perfect, the audio was great, and the sheer number of props in the place just isn't comparable. Teresa - The theme of a historic institute for the criminally insane gone horribly wrong (in the best sci-fi way) is a really fun setting. Check out the website for the full backstory. There's so much you could find in such a place and you will. All that and more! You wander through so many crazed doctors and patients and experiments gone wrong (I hope they didn't intend for that to happen!). The interaction with the characters really puts you in the story in a really fun way. You're not just observing, you're actively making your way through, just hoping to get out without being turned into an experiment yourself! Todd - The builds of this “institute” are chaotic and anything but sterile. There are some really off the wall things going on where the crazies run about. I was happy to see that the train ride at the end felt more enclosed too. |
What Makes This Haunt Special
Paul - I don't think there's a more entertaining haunt in the region. It's scary, funny, gross, dark, and creepy. But the biggest compliment in my eyes- American Horrorplex makes me happy. I get excited to visit, I have a great time while I'm there, and I love talking about it after.
Teresa - To me, this place is one of the most welcoming haunted attractions. Which sounds odd when talking about a haunt, but it's true. Everyone can have a good time here. They really care about being inclusive and they welcome everyone into their asylum for treatment! Just go and have tons of fun! Todd - Aside from being totally entertaining, there is a fantastic assortment of vendors outside the haunt with all kinds of crafts, artwork, jewelry, etc for sale. There’s goats too! I mean. Who doesn’t want to go pet goats? |
What Can Be Worked On
Paul - Uhhh? Make it even longer so I get to spend extra time in their crazy world?
Teresa - It's getting better every year, but scenes can always be improved, tweaked, and added to. They have a great theme and it's quite fun. Keep exploring ways to keep us on our toes! Or at least ways to crack us up! Love the creativity! Todd - This is a tough thing to answer this year. I honestly can’t think of anything! |
In Summary
Paul - I love the American Horrorplex. I think everyone should visit, and I recommend it to everyone. Quite simply, I think it's the one of the most entertaining haunt experiences you'll find anywhere. The combination of scares and laughs is probably the best I've experienced in any haunt.
Teresa - This place is a must-see if you love a place with humor. Read about the backstory and go prepared to get scared and have some laughs. Then spend an hour hanging out, talking to vendors or watching a show!
Todd - Kudos to this team. It was fantastic! Everything was on point this year. The new queue/intro is very well done as well. I really hope this crew returns next year.
